160 events scheduled for technical festival

Cognizance 2012, the annual technical festival, started at IIT, Roorkee, today. The second largest festival of Indian technical institutes spread its wings for three days starting from March 23. More than 160 technical events are scheduled in three days, which include discussions, presentations and workshops by various colleges from all over the country.
Inaugurating the festival, the Director, IIT, Roorkee, Professor Banerjee, said that every country needs a developed society and a well developed technical infrastructure. He further said that England today stands as super power in the industrial revolution, and on the other side Germany has skilled itself in technology. America is a developed economic power because of its expertise in computer technology and nano technology. “Technology is the only key for developing a country and it's society," said the Director, IIT.
The students today at IIT campus attended various events under which the main attraction remained were the Robo sapiens, which included autonomous and manual robots. The students went glued on seeing the award winning model of a steam engine designed by Iqbal, professional model designer of Nagpur. A class IX dropout, Iqbal displayed his model weighing 1.72 gram, fly wheel measuring just 6.8 mm (0.267 inch) and is called “thumbnail” steam engine. Today he holds the world record for constructing this smallest working stationary steam engine, which had its entry into the Guinness Book of World Record in 2001.
